It may be tempting to seek shelter inside all winter, but sprinting beside snowmen, sharing cocoa with owls and honoring a heroic civil rights leader are three great reasons to head outdoors this month:

  • Mansfield: Snowman Run – This snowman-themed 5K race is geared toward children and families. Race shirts feature three “coal” buttons, and participants often complete the look by adding scarves, hats and more. Special prizes are awarded for best-dressed snowman, and the race concludes with a “warm down” area that includes hot cocoa, s’mores and a huge fire pit. Register for the January 20 run.
  • Carrollton: 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade – Come celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by watching a free memorial parade through the streets of Carrollton Jan. 13. The parade will begin behind Carrollton City Hall and run for several blocks. Learn more.
  • Lewisville: Owl Prowl and Campfire – Join expert guides and stroll through a forested night to listen for owls, armadillos rustling in the underbrush and maybe a howling coyote. The hike will end around a campfire, where s’mores will be made and hot chocolate sipped. Learn more about the Jan. 27 event.
