NTTA Maintenance Department Wins Three Public Works Awards

NTTA Maintenance Department Wins Three Public Works Awards

NTTA’s maintenance team secured three awards at the Texas Public Works Association Annual Conference that recently took place in Galveston. These recognitions included:

  • Public Works Leader of the Year
  • Project of the Year
  • Technical Innovation

The first award, “Public Works Leader of the Year,” commended NTTA Director of Maintenance Eric Hemphill for his outstanding career service to the public works profession. Eric’s professional and civic leadership, commitment to employee safety and tremendous impact at the Authority and beyond contributed to his win.

The second award, “Project of the Year,” highlighted the Dallas North Tollway southbound bridge deck repair hydrodemolition project. This award recognizes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects.

After years of heavy traffic (more than 18,000 vehicles per day on this area), the concrete on the bridge deck began to show significant wear. Traditional methods of concrete replacement would require the bridge be closed three to four months to allow the old concrete to be chipped out and new concrete poured and cured. Due to the need to repair the concrete, and not the structure itself, NTTA decided to try an alternative method.

New to Texas and NTTA, hydrodemolition uses high-velocity water jets to remove deteriorated concrete in a more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient way. Hydrodemolition is now the organization’s preferred method for all main lane bridge deck repairs.

For the third and final award, “Technical Innovation,” NTTA Signs and Fabrication Supervisor John Davis was featured for the design and construction of a barrel truck. This specialized vehicle protects NTTA crews by reducing the amount of time boots touch the ground as workers set up a safety zone, helping to ensure the daily safety of workers.
