Ask the Experts: 4 Advanced-Level TollTag Hacks That Could Transform Your Life

Q: I loved the TollTag life hacks you wrote about back in December. Are there any other tricks I can use to get the most out of my TollTag?

A: Yup, and we bet you’ll like these too. For this list of hacks, we’ll first describe a scenario that might make you want to try them._

  1. Situation: Your bank account is a little bit anemic after the holidays, and you don’t want to be surprised by an automatic withdrawal from your bank account or be frustrated by an automatic charge to your credit card.

Solution: Make a manual payment before the automatic rebill hits. ($20 TollTag accounts are automatically rebilled when the balance dips below $5, and $40 TollTag accounts are rebilled when the balance falls below $10.)

How To: Log into your TollTag account online or through the Tollmate app and choose “Make a Payment” at the bottom of the menu under “Account Maintenance.” Make a $10 payment at any time to keep your balance above the minimum threshold.

  1. Situation: You want to take your TollTag account management a step further by planning your toll road trips with cost in mind. You might even want to enter a toll road father down or exit sooner to save on tolls.

Solution: Calculate the tolls on any NTTA road before you leave. (NTTA’s tolls don’t fluctuate throughout the day, so you can be confident that your calculation will be accurate.)

How To: If you haven’t already, download the free Tollmate app (available in Spanish and English) in Google Play or iTunes. With the app, you can enter your starting point and destination within North Texas, and the app will give you several options, including the cost for each.

  1. Situation: You’ve nabbed a sweet deal on airfare and you’re hoping to continue your cost-savings streak.

Solution: Save up to 50 percent off the cost of parking at DFW International Airport when you prepay for your parking at DFW International Airport. The discount is biggest for terminal parking.

How To: From the airport’s Prepaid Parking website, enter the dates of your departure and return. Select “Continue” and select the location you’d like to park. Then just enter the requested personal, vehicle and payment information, and you’re ready to go. Watch this short video for more information. Disclaimer: You don’t technically have to have a TollTag to use prepaid parking, but it’s easier and more time-efficient if you do.

  1. Situation: Your teenager just got her driver’s license, and you don’t want to get her ZipCash bills in the mail, but you do want to keep a close eye on when she’s using toll roads.

Solution: Add her vehicle to your TollTag account and opt into receiving a monthly statement of all your TollTag transactions via email.

How To: First, add her vehicle to your TollTag account. Two vehicles can share a $20 TollTag account balance, and as many as three vehicles can share a $40 TollTag account. (If you already have the maximum number of vehicles linked to your TollTag account, you can go online to open a new TollTag account for your daughter with a $20 deposit. We will mail your daughter’s TollTag to you.) To add a vehicle, go online or use the Tollmate app to log into your TollTag account.

If you’re on the web, select “Vehicle/TollTag Info” from the menu on the left. Then, click the “Request Additional TollTag” button toward the bottom of your screen. On the next screen, enter the license plate number, the state the vehicle is registered in and the vehicle’s year, color, make and model. If the vehicle has more than two axles, select the correct number of axles. Then click “Save.” We will mail you a new TollTag for your daughter’s vehicle.

If you’re using the Tollmate app, select “New Tag Requests” from the menu. Enter the license plate number and the state the vehicle is registered in. If the vehicle has more than two axles, select the correct number of axles. Then enter the vehicle’s year, color, make and model. Then click “Save.” We will mail you a new TollTag for your daughter’s vehicle.

Next, either online or in the Tollmate app, select “User Preferences” from the menu. Near the middle of the screen, you will see a menu that allows you to opt in to receive emailed airport parking receipts and monthly statements for your TollTag account. If you’re on the web, select “Yes,” and ensure your email address is correct. If you’re using the Tollmate app, slide the dot to right. You should see a green indicator appear. Then, click “Save.”
