Ask the Experts: Intoxicated vs. “Intexticated” Driving

Q: I’ve heard that texting while driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. Is that true?

A: Great question! A lot of attention has been given to tragedies caused by people who chose to drink and drive, but many people don’t realize how deadly texting while driving actually is. In fact, nearly a fifth of all crashes in Texas last year were caused by distracted driving, and nearly 400 people died in those crashes.

Drunk vs. an inattentive driver? None of us should have to face either threat on the road.

Whether you’re at a Halloween celebration or just out for fun, we urge anyone who’s been drinking to designate a sober driver, and we ask everyone to park their phones while their cars are in gear. With all we do know about the risks of both drunk and “intexticated” driving, there’s no excuse to take a chance on your life or the life of someone else.
